Displacement
Displacement is the volume (= stroke volume) that can be drawn
in or discharged when a piston is in reciprocating motion inside
a cylinder.
Since displacement indicates the amount of air drawn in, it is
closely related to output, that is, engine power output, when
the air is made to expand.
Displacement is generally expressed in cc or liters.
Furthermore, if the inner diameter and stroke dimensions in a
cylinder are known, displacement can be derived using the
following equation.
V = (π/4 × D × D) × L × N
V: Total displacement (cc) (rounded down to the nearest whole
number)
D: Cylinder inner diameter (cm)
L: Cylinder stroke (cm)
N: Number of cylinders
π: 3.1416
