Lever type
Lever type starters are one type of manual starter and are
started by attaching a detachable lever to the engine and
turning it.
Lever type starters are used for small diesel engines.
Because diesel engines have a high compression ratio, they are
equipped with a decompression lever to facilitate manual turning
of the starter lever when starting.
Decompression levers are designed to push open the exhaust valve
or intake valve to release cylinder compression pressure when
operated.
This means that if the starting lever is turned while operating
the decompression lever, and the decompression lever is then
released at a point where momentum has been built up and the
compression position exceeded, the engine will start.
